3 car collision question with insurance adjustors?

my friend and i were in an accident the other day (my first ever…its horrible!); there was a sudden stop, and the car in front of us hit the car in front of them. my friend wasn’t able to break in time, so she hit the car in front of her. no one was injured, no air bags deployed, but my friends car suffered a lot of damage to the front. actually, her car had the most damage to the front. the middle car had damage to the back and front (obviously), but his front was more damaged than the back. the front car had some scratches to the back, but nothing too significant. now its my friend’s headache, because the middle car is claiming that it was all her fault! can he do that? with the way the damage is on the cars? our insurance adjustor had said that since the front car had more damage to the front than the back, that indicates he hit the front car there first, since the area of most damage indicates where the accident occured initially. is that right? please help!

Yes, your adjuster is correct. That is one way liability adjusters determine liability on multi-car rear end accidents. They also will take statements from all 3 drivers. It is important how many impacts the driver of the front vehicle felt. It sounds like the insurance adjuster will be on your friends side and not pay out anything that is not warranted. Good luck!

The key here is the 1st car. If the 1st car agrees that they felt 2 impacts, then the 2nd car is on the hook for the 1st car. The 2nd car is trying to get off the hook for this accident and have your friends insurance pay for all of his damages plus the 1st car.

Here is how it will mostly work out.
1st car; no fault;
will get 50 % from 2nd car for rear end damages
will get 50% from your friends insurance for rear end damages totaling 100%

2nd car; if proven he in fact did hit 1st car 1st,
your friends insurance will pay 50% for his front end (due to 2nd impact)
100% for his rear end damages;
So 2nd car would have to pay 50% of his front damages himself

Your friends front end damages would be paid by FRIENDS INSURANCE if she has collision plus pay for the other 2 cars in the percentage shown. If friend has no collision coverage, then your friend would pay out of pocket to fix.

Since car 2 damages are more damaged in the front, is more in your friends favor, since if only 1 impact that your friend rear end #2, then was pushed into #1, would not hold water, since the damages should be greater in the back vs the front.

Let the insurance companies handle and be glad there is insurance, since all 3 adjusters will haggle what they are going to pay. Just be glad no one was hurt.

good luck
