Car Accident/Insurance Question?

In: Cars Insurance

2 May 2010

I let my uncle drive my car. He hit the car in front of him, since there was not any damage done to the other car, they driver said that calling the police was not needed and he left the scene. In turn my uncle drove home, now I have to figure out what to do.

Can i report this accident to my insurance company since there isn’t a police report?

What are my other options?

There is no police report
my car was damaged, but the other car was not.

You DON”T need to have a police report to file a claim with your insurance company. As long as your Uncle has accepted liability. But you do want to make sure your insurance covers other drivers on your policy.

In most cases insurance follows the driver. So, your uncle can file under his coverage to cover the damage to your car. You do not need a police report in this case since the other party drove off. If he has uninsured coverage you will be OK. As others have reported you can file under your under uninsured if your uncle does not have coverage. In most cases it helps if you post what state the accident occurred, as these can be state specific.

Insurance follows the CAR, not the driver. In this case, your insurance will be primary, then your insurance company may decide to go after your uncle’s insurance. But to answer your question, no, a police report won’t be necessary in this case, since there will be nothing to investigate. This is a cut-and-dried at-fault accident.

If you want your car repaired, you have no choice but to report it to your insurance company. The police should ALWAYS be called and then your insurance company should be called. No exceptions ! NONE!
