I recently had a trip where I accidentally brushed my car of a gas station pole. It was a low velocity impact and my bumper has got damaged. I want to know if I can claim this using auto insurance (everything in the US). Also if it works out to be cheap enough can I pay for it myself without telling my insurance company?

If you have the correct coverage on your policy, you should be able to claim it, however, chances are you will have a deductible. Get an estimate first and check it against your deductible to see if it’s worth submitting.
In some states if you even mention it to your company they have to process the claim so be careful about that. But there is no law that says you have to submit the claim to your company.

Get an estimate for the damage before contacting your insurance if you think it will be minor. If it is under your deductible settle it w/o insurance and all will be fine. If it is over your deductible ask yourself this, is the small amount of money I get going to pay for the amount of increased insurance rates I’m going to have over the next 3 years.
In general if the claim is small you should settle it yourself and keep insurance out of it. If it is large then settle with insurance.
You never have to advise your insurance company of damage you caused to your own vehicle if no other property is damaged or the other party’s agree to settle out of court/insurance with you. It will not cause you any problems as long as you have the damage repaired.

Yes you can pay for the damage without notifieng your insurance company. Get an estimate and compare it to what your dductible on your collission coverage is, then make your decision.
