How is automobile insurance not extortion?

nmtgirl, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately that’s a luxury reserved for the wealthy. You need like $35K minimum to open a bond like that. :(
Liligirl: Hey, thanks for posting… Okay, fair enough, but “What if” and “If not, then” kinda echoes of some type sociological blackmail. If you aren’t insured, you’re life will be reduced to every kind of hell imaginable… It just seems so wrong. By the way, I’m not an uninsured driver if anyone was getting that from my post.

It is mandated by law. So blame your elected officials

How is it?

It stops you having to fork out a huge lump sum if you crash. And if you were to knock someone down or be at fault in a serious accident you could be sued for millions. How extortionate is car insurance now?

Insurance is the second oldest profession! It started out with crooks saying ‘pay us to insure we don’t burn your house down’ – I worked in insurance and anyone I met who worked in insurance I SWEAR they did not have a soul. I had to get out of that field. Be careful too your agent did ’slide’ in rental and towing, or any other gimmicking extras.

LOL

I agree. You pay large sums of cash each month to “protect your investment”. Then when you need to make a claim, they punish you by charging you more money afterward. Sometimes it is better to save the money you pay month after month in a savings account and then pay out of pocket if something happens.

How is not evident that insurance is vital?

How shall I pay my medical expenses if I am injured in a collision with an uninsured motorist?

Do you have any idea how your life would be ruined, permanently, if you were injured, even moderately, in an accident? YOu would lose work and therefore your income, you would have medical bills up the yang and no money to pay them, your credit would go to hell because of the unpaid medical bills (even if your health insurance covered some of them, the co pays alone could mount into the hundreds of thousands of dollars after a serious injury). So, your ability to buy a home or a car or pay for education for a new career (especially if you worked in a physically demanding field and could no longer work in it after injury) would be zero.

I agree that auto insurance is high, but you have no idea how badly the uninsured motorists on the road have contributed to the skyrocketing cost of both insurance and medical treatment.

By the way, it costs almost nothing in premiums to increase your policy from the minimum 15/30 (which is used up in days following a serious accident) to adequate insurance of at least 300/500.

Underinsured and uninsured motorists are the reason your premiums are so expensive. Plain and simple

Rental car insurance is gimmicky? She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. If your car is being repaired, do you want to have to fork out of pocket for a rental vehicle?

Everyone should be required to carry minimum liability coverage. It’s a choice to pay anything more than that. And if you bought a car with cash, you wouldn’t be forced to carry full coverage. Extortion? Well, that’s a matter of opinion. I don’t think so though.

It’s entirely voluntary.

If you don’t want to drive on public roadways – which is a PRIVILEGE, not a right – then you don’t need to buy insurance.

Heck, you can move to NH or WI, and STILL drive on public roadways without insurance.

It’s for your own protection as well as the protection of others.

If I got into a car accident and it was MY fault….I would want the person I hit to be taken care of. It’s only fair that they get their car fixed and their medical bills paid…they didn’t do anything wrong!

If it was NOT my fault, I would want the person that hit me to pay the damages…that’s only fair right? Thus, they need to have insurance to pay for my car repairs and medical bills..if they don’t have insurance, thank goodness I have Uninsured Motorist to fix my car.

Do you realize how much it costs to get a car repaired these days?

Because it is mandated by the state, not a private person.
