4 Jul 2010I’ve never made a claim before this first one, a deer ran in front of my car and caused severe damage. Now five months later someone hit my car in parking lot (I think) nothing major just a 6″ black mark that pushed the body in a bit. Will they raise my rates? If so then I would just go a get it fixed and pay for it all out of pocket.
This is about Auto Insurance Information.

In general, any accident you get in to will cause your insurance rates to rise. If it is a fairly minor amount of damage, I would recomment paying for it out of pocket.

Well the deer encounter won’t and the parking lot incident won’t as individual claims, but put them both together in a six month period and you may have a problem.
Depends on the damage costs, but I would consider not telling the insurance company about the parking lot incident and eat the damage myself. You may consider upping your deductible (to maybe $1000) and not only will you save money but you won’t be inclined making small claims, thus saving your record.

Yes, fix the small one yourself!! If you like your company and price you’re paying, don’t put in that second claim. The Deer collision claim is Act of God stuff. It will not raise your rates. If your rate goes up at renewal time, it is a general rate increase. But if you put in a Collision claim, 1. You will pay your Collision Deductible up front. 2. Your company might consider you “Accident Prone”, and NON-RENEW your policy for Claims Experience. This is especially true with Homeowners Policies, I advise my clients if you can afford to replace the carpet or repair the busted pipe, do it. Homeowners companies will drop you for excessive claims in a hurry.

Only when you are deemed more than 51% at fault for a collision and depending on the state, the amount of property damage, can your premium be increased. As for the deer that ran in front of your car – most likely it was considered either a comprehensive loss, or a not at fault collision loss; as for when your car was hit in a parking lot – was your car parked? If so, it’s also considered not at fault, therefore your preimums cannot increase for that. You would only be responsible for your deductible.
